All National Hockey League teams travel extensively during a season in order to face each of the 31 other NHL teams abroad at least once.
Obviously, this puts a huge headache on the table for the league in terms of creating each team’s schedule and schedule.
Sometimes you have to combine matches in sequence when they’re in the same region to make it make sense, but sometimes that’s not the case.
We must also not forget that in all of this, we must think about the availability of the various NHL amphitheaters, and that there is no scheduling conflict with another sport or a show/concert.
Each team therefore has its own route in a season, sometimes with fairly illogical organizations.
In short, all 32 teams travel a lot in a season, but there are some that really cover more distance in a season.
What stands out this year is really the difference of nearly 17,000 kilometers of travel between the Montreal Canadiens and the Ottawa Senators.
How is this possible?
How can so much travel distance separate two teams that are only two hours away?
The CH is the 13th team to cover the most kilometers this season with 43,300, while the Ottawa Senators are 31st with 32,800 kilometers.
However, Ottawa is the closest city with an NHL team to Montreal.
There was therefore clearly a better organization of the calendar for the Senators than for the CH.
-And we know that, and we have been able to note it for several weeks, even a month.
- On December 14, the CH made a return trip to Winnipeg to face the Jets, then returned directly to Montreal for a match at the Bell Center against the Buffalo Sabres.
- On December 29, the Habs left Tampa Bay to go to Vegas to face the Golden Knights on the 31st.
- On December 3, the CH was in Chicago and then faced the Avalanche in Colorado the next day, while a three-hour flight separated the two cities.
- Last Friday, December 10, the Habs left for Washington for a simple round trip before playing the next day at the Bell Center against the Dallas Stars.
In short, it is a very questionable calendar.
The Habs are also the third team in the entire Eastern Conference to travel the most this season after only the two Florida teams, which logically, given their geographical position (very south) are in the top -10.
In the end, this shouldn’t change a lot of things, and seriously, as CH supporters, especially at the moment, we can’t complain about the travel and the matches on the road.
It is partly with difficult matches abroad against big clubs that CH began its incredible streak since December 17.
It is still interesting to note to what extent there can be a big difference in kilometers covered between two teams that are so close.
