At Beerschot, the state of the land available is a sensitive subject. But the management will ultimately replace the lawn (or what remains of it) at Kiel.
During the last matches against Anderlecht and Antwerp, Dirk Kuyt was simply ashamed to host his counterparts on such a pitch. The staff and players had been deploring for weeks the conditions in which matches and training had to be held.
Kuyt was quite fatalistic about the chances of seeing management invest in a new billiard table. The Dutchman was no doubt preparing to have wheelbarrows of sand added until the end of the season to try to plug the holes.
But the miracle took place: the Antwerp board announced that it had given the green light for the laying of a new lawn, the work should begin at the end of the week, with the objective of having a passable pitch to host the Union Saint-Gilloise on January 26.
My kingdom for a lawn
The supporters were also devastated by the state of the grass. One of them, Alexander Schellemans, a 20-year-old student, even went so far as to launch crowdfunding to urge management to do what was necessary.
And the money raised will be used, reports Het Nieuwsblad! Made aware of this participatory prize pool, the club will use the amount collected to also improve the condition of the grounds of the training center on Place de l’Université.
