The strength of a country at the Olympic Games rests above all on the athletes who reach the podium thanks to their performances.
While most people would have a hard time imagining being there to receive a medal just once, these athletes have accomplished this feat time and time again, making it into the Canadian record books.
Who are the most decorated Canadian Olympians at the Winter Games?
Charles Hamelin – short track speed skating – 6 medals (4 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze)
Cindy Klassen – long track speed skating – 6 medals (1 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze)
Representing Canada at five Winter Olympics, Charles Hamelin won at least one medal in each appearance, making him the first male speed skating athlete to medal in five different Olympic Games.
Hamelin capped his Olympic career at Beijing 2022 with a gold medal in the men’s 5,000m relay. He won two gold medals in less than 30 minutes at Vancouver 2010, where he was victorious in the men’s 500m and 5000m relay. He then won gold in the 1500m at Sochi 2014. Hamelin also has a silver medal in the 5000m relay from Turin 2006 and a bronze medal in the 5000m relay from PyeongChang 2018.
Representing Canada at three consecutive Winter Olympics from 2002 to 2010, Cindy Klassen’s greatest success came at Turin 2006, where she reached the podium in all five of her events: 1000m (silver), 1500 m (gold), 3000 m (bronze), 5000 m (bronze) and team pursuit (silver). Before winning everything in Turin, Klassen also won bronze in the 3000m at Salt Lake City 2002.
Until swimmer Penny Oleksiak won her seventh Olympic medal at Tokyo 2020, Klassen was tied with former teammate Clara Hughes, who won four medals in long track speed skating and two in road cycling, as as the most decorated Canadian athlete at the Olympic Games, all seasons combined.
Which Canadian athletes have won the most gold medals at the Winter Games?
Jayna Hefford – ice hockey – 4
Hayley Wickenheiser – hockey sur glace – 4
Caroline Ouellette – ice hockey – 4
Charles Hamelin – short track speed skating – 4
In the highly anticipated debut of women’s ice hockey on the Olympic program, Hayley Wickenheiser and Jayna Hefford helped Canada win the silver medal. Hungry for the taste of gold, they satisfied that craving in Salt Lake City in 2002, where Caroline Ouellette was also part of the team. These three players went on to win successive gold medals at Turin 2006, Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014. At the latter Games, Ouellette became the first winter athlete in the world to compete in four Olympic events and win gold in each of them.
Charles Hamelin became the first Canadian male athlete and the first Canadian athlete in a sport other than hockey to win four gold medals.
No Canadian Summer Games athlete has won more than three Olympic gold medals.
Which Canadian athlete has won the most medals in a single Winter Olympics?
Cindy Klassen – long track speed skating – 5 medals (Turin 2006)
As a direct result of his success at Turin 2006, Klassen’s five medals in long track speed skating allowed him to achieve a record: more podiums at a single Olympic Games than any other Canadian athlete, in any sport and all seasons combined.
The record for the most medals won by a Canadian athlete at a single Summer Olympics is four, a feat shared by swimmers Penny Oleksiak (Rio 2016) and Summer McIntosh (Paris 2024)
Men 3 – Gaétan Boucher (long track speed skating, Sarajevo 1984), Marc Gagnon (short track speed skating, Salt Lake City 2002), Steven Dubois (short track speed skating, Beijing 2022)
It was at the Sarajevo Games in 1984 that Gaétan Boucher experienced his greatest Olympic success, reaching the podium in each of his three events. He won gold in the 1000m and 1500m, as well as bronze in the 500m. Thanks to an identical collection of medals in short track in Salt Lake City in 2002, Marc Gagnon joined Gaétan Boucher at the top of the list of Canadian male athletes with the most medals at a single edition of the Winter Games. Later, another short track speed skater, Steven Dubois, was added to this select group by winning a medal of each color at Beijing 2022.
