As he enters the Australian Open this Monday against the Briton Jacob Fearnley, Nick Kyrgios spoke in the columns of the Team about his ambitions, his career and how he imagines his future. The Australian first responded about his place in current tennis: “I am important to this sport because I am totally different from other tennis players. My style of play is unique, I don’t have a coach and I attract new fans. Everywhere I played over the last few years, the stands were full to see me.”. The former thirteenth player in the world also spoke about the confidence he displayed on the court: “I will always think I can beat anyone. This is the mentality you need to have. All the greatest athletes in the world think they are the best in their discipline. It’s not something that can be learned, you either have this belief in yourself or you don’t. I will never lose confidence. If I play my tennis unpredictable, I have my chances against anyone.”
Kyrgios also spoke about his choice to choose tennis over other sports when he was younger: “If I could go back in time, probably I would try basketball rather than tennis. I probably would have had a little more fun. A sport like basketball would appreciate my personality more. My father forced me to choose tennis when I was 14. He told me: ‘We’re going to give up basketball and concentrate on tennis.’ The 29-year-old then spoke about how he imagined his life in 10 years: “I’m not going to plan anything, but my goal has always been to retire around the age of 30. I would like to have a family by then, spend time with them and enjoy all the efforts I have made. In ten years, I see myself having a big family, four or five children, and smoking a big joint in the Bahamas. In the event of a victory against Fearnley, Kyrgios will face the winner of the Baez-Cazaux match.
