Three defeats et five wins ! This is the record of French clubs in the Champions Cup during the 3e daytime. All teams have at least one victory since the start of the European season. Everyone can still hope for qualification for the round of 16 which will be played on April 4, 5 and 6, 2025. Here is a summary before the last day.
They are qualified
After this 3e day of the Champions Cup, Bordeaux-Bègles was a hit by winning the maximum points (15) and by being leader of his group. UBB displays a balance sheet of three bonus victories in three matches. For the moment, it is the best European club in the competition for this 2024-2025 season.
Already qualified for the round of 16, Yannick Bru’s men will receive the Sharks Sunday January 19 at 2 p.m. with the objective of retaining first place. An improved success would protect Bordeaux-Bègles from a return of the Toulouse residents.
Second in the standings behind UBB, with the same number of successes, Stade Toulousain is guaranteed to play in the round of 16. Victorious in South Africa against the Sharks, Antoine Dupont and his teammates failed to take the offensive bonus point which would have allowed them to beat the Girondins.
Toulouse will have the opportunity to regain its leading position on Sunday January 19 at 4:15 p.m. The European champions will know the result of the Union Bordeaux-Bègles and will know what they will have to do against Leicester.
Leader of his group after his three victories in three matches, Toulon already has its ticket for the final stages. In the ranking, the RCT (13 points) is one point ahead of Glasgow. Despite a defeat in three matches, the Scots have 12 points including four bonus points.
Pierre Mignoni’s men travel on Sunday January 19 at 6:30 p.m. on the lawn of Sale. An improved success in England would allow the Varois to keep first place of their hen. Facing Toulon, the English will play for their future in the Champions Cup.
They are very close
After their defeat against Leinster, La Rochelle is overtaken by the Irish province leader of its group. With two successes, the Maritimes are in second position with 10 points ahead of Bath and Bennetton who have a victory and 7 points.
The Rochelais will play their fourth and final Champions Cup group match in Italy against Benetton. A simple success in Treviso allows Ronan O’Gara’s players to secure their place in the round of 16. To regain first place, it will be necessary to count on a defeat for Leinster against Bath.
Clermont occupies fifth place in its group with two defeats on the meter. Only colon separate the Clermontois from third place occupied by Bath ahead of Benetton.
Christophe Urios’ players will face the English from Bristol on Saturday January 18 on the Marcel-Michelin pitch. The Jaunards must absolutely win against the Bears while hoping for a defeat for Bath or Benetton against Leinster and La Rochelle respectively. Which is very likely…
They still have their destiny in hand
Fourth in its group, two points behind the leader, Castres displays two victories like Saracens, Munster and Northampton who are ahead of the French club. The only difference: the number of bonus points. Only one for the Tarnais when the Saries and the Munstermen have two and three for the Saints.
Mathieu Babillot and his teammates will travel at Saracens Sunday January 19 at 4:15 p.m. A victory in England assures them a place in the round of 16. In the event of defeat, the Castres will depend on the result of the Stade Français in South Africa against the Bulls.
In last place in its group, Racing 92 has only one victory in three matches without having taken a bonus. Ile-de-France residents count four points and are ahead of Sale, the Stormers and the Harlequins who each have 5 points. Everything remains possible !
The Racingmen will play a real 16th final facing the Stormers. A reception for the South Africans on Saturday January 18 at 9 p.m. at Paris La Defense Arena. By winning against this South African franchise, Nolann Le Garrec and his teammates will continue their adventure in the Champions Cup.
It’s still possible
They have their destiny linked with the Olympic Castres. After the 3e Champions Cup day, Stade Français is at the fifth place of their group with the same record as Racing 92. The victory against leader Northampton this weekend allows them to still believe in their luck.
Success is imperativeimproved even better, Saturday January 18 at 2 p.m. on the Bulls pitch in Pretoria. Laurent Labit’s men will then have to hope for a poor performance from Castres without defensive bonus points.
