The CH sent a message to Jake Evans

The Montreal Canadiens have put their cards on the table with Jake Evans: the wish is to keep him, but not at any cost.

This is the latest information reported by renowned informant Pierre LeBrun on TSN on Thursday.

“The Canadiens have let Evans know that they will try to extend him, but that they cannot afford to offer him a contract that would represent a home run,” LeBrun said. Both clans will have to put water in their wine.”

Still according to LeBrun, who mentioned the day before an interest from the New Jersey Devils in this matter, very preliminary negotiations took place between the two camps, but nothing concrete.

“No figures have been put forward.”

Beyond salary, the length of the contract could prove to be a sticking point.

“If the Canadiens can’t sign him, I think the length would be an obstacle. I don’t know if they are ready to go up to five or six years with the players who are coming to their organization.

As Evans’ contract currently only occupies $1.7 million of the payroll, several contending teams will be interested in his services. The Habs will have a decision to make if the negotiations do not progress as planned.

“Many contending teams have circled his name,” LeBrun said, “and they are waiting to see how CH will handle this situation.”
