The first snow of 2025 fell on part of southern Belgium. A few winter showers are still expected before drier weather. The yellow alert for slippery conditions was lifted at 12 p.m.
The year has barely started and you have already taken out your shovels, frost scrapers, hats and warm scarves this Thursday morning. At least if you live in one of the regions affected by heavy snowfall. In the provinces of Liège and Luxembourg, a white layer of several centimeters has covered the winter landscapes.
In Herve, up to 8 centimeters of snow formed in places.
Risk still present
Clearing weather is forecast for Thursday afternoon across the entire country, but the risk of showers will remain present. The maxima will vary from 0 to 7 degrees. The weather is expected to be brighter and drier on Friday and Saturday.
This afternoon, cloudy areas will alternate with clearings in most regions, with a risk of a few (winter) showers in the Ardennes in particular. Maximum temperatures will vary between 0 degrees in the Hautes Fagnes and 6 to 7 degrees on the Coast. The wind will be light to moderate, sometimes quite strong at sea.
Ice patches
During the night from Thursday to Friday, many low clouds will persist in the Ardennes, with sometimes reduced visibility. In the center and northeast, large sunny spells will alternate with cloudy areas, and winter showers may fall locally. The minimums will vary from -4 degrees in the Ardennes, to 0 and -1 degrees in the center, and up to +3 degrees on the coast. Patches of ice could make roads slippery in places.
A yellow warning was in effect for slippery conditions on the roads of Luxembourg, Namur and Liège. This yellow alert was lifted at noon.
-A difficult situation
“It rolls, but slowly. Drivers are cautious, more cautious than usual. I slipped myself a few moments ago. A thin film of snow makes the roadway very slippery. Prudence“, recommends our journalist, Lise Cassoth, to Herve, where snow has been falling heavily since early Thursday morning.
“I live in a cul-de-sac, so it’s slippery“, says Océane, residing in the Liège province. “We’re going to stay on the main road this morning.” Another pragmatic Liégeoise is already thinking about her day at work: “It’s nice, but we’re thinking about how we’re going to go to work“.
Snowfall or slush affects the south-east of the country this morning, then it will evacuate towards France and Germany at midday. Cloudiness is variable across the country with some occasional wintry showers which will spread from the North Sea.
Low clouds sometimes limit visibility in the upper Ardennes. The maxima will vary between 0 degrees in the upper Ardennes where a few additional centimeters of snow will be added, and 7 degrees by the sea. The wind is weak to moderate from west to northwest, along the coast sometimes quite strong from north to northwest.
The IRM had extended its alert for slippery conditions in the provinces of Namur, Liège and Luxembourg until 12:00 p.m. Low winter precipitation (risk of freezing drizzle) or frost deposits (freezing fog especially in the upper Ardennes) led to slippery conditions in these provinces. You will have to be particularly wary of a risk of formation of ice patches, especially in places sheltered from the wind this morning.
