The former runner Pascal Hervéshort-lived wearer of the pink jersey in the 1996 Giro before being caught up in the Festina doping affair, died on the night of December 24 to 25 at the age of 60, announced the National Union of Professional Cyclists (UNCP).

The circumstances of the Frenchman's death have not been specified, but he revealed last September that he had been operated on for a ” cancerous stomach tumor » in the middle of the year, with a “complete removal of the stomach”.

“Pascal was an emblematic figure and an essential voice of our sport,” the UNCP reacted on X (ex-Twitter). The great cycling family is in mourning.”

The announcement of his death sparked reactions on social networks from former teammates of Pascal Hervé.

“Pascal, my friend, I’m so upset,” wrote Laurent Brochard, who ran with Hervé at Festina, in particular on X.

“You left on Christmas night my friend, you are so rock’n’roll until the end… I keep so many memories, good times, and projects to come […] I don't have the words. You were always there, always a word even in difficult times. I love you and I kiss you my friend, we will see each other again, I will miss you,” he continued.

Caught up in a doping case in the 2000s

Former amateur world champion, Pascal Hervé had ended his career at age 37 after a positive test at the Tour of Italy 2001, three years after being suspended for two months for his involvement in the Festina affair, notably alongside Richard Virenque, whose loyal lieutenant he was for a long time.

After a retraining in cateringhe then moved to Quebec between 2015 and 2017, where the native of worked as coach and sports director of the Garneau-Québecor team then he left the cycling world.
