The Brazilian João Fonseca, 145th in the world, won the NextGen ATP Finals, the Masters for under-21s, by winning on Sunday in Jeddah against the American Learner Tien (122nd) with a score of 2-4, 4-3 (10-8), 4-0, 4-2.
The youngest player of this edition at only 18 years old, João Fonseca had a flawless performance, winning his five matches.
He succeeds the Serbian Hamad Medjedovic on the winners of a tournament which has notably crowned since its creation in 2017 Jannick Sinner (in 2019) and Carlos Alcaraz (in 2021), current world No.1 and No.3.
Fonseca and Tien (19) had already faced each other on Thursday in the group stage, and the Brazilian clearly won 4-0, 4-0, 1-4, 4-2.
Born in 2006 in Rio de Janeiro, Joao Fonseca has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the world of professional tennis.
In February 2024, then ranked above 600 in the world, Fonseca created a surprise by reaching the quarter-finals of the ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro. He notably beat Arthur Fils, seeded number 7, thus becoming the first player born in 2006 to win a match on the ATP circuit.
His progression continued with a first Challenger final in Paraguay in March 2024, followed by his first Challenger title in Lexington in August, making him the youngest champion in this category for the 2024 season
