An unrestricted free agent at the end of this season, the future of Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares remains unclear.
That said, the former New York Islanders was clear about his desires for the years to come: to stay with the Queen City club.

“I said it before, I would love to stay and I hope it works,” he said in comments relayed by the National Hockey League website on Friday. That’s my goal and intention.”
Even though he failed to achieve his ultimate goal with the team, winning a Stanley Cup, Tavares could not have hoped for better since his arrival in Toronto.
“It was really great to share this moment with the children,” he continued. They played an important role and were able to live this experience with me. That’s life, that’s what matters most, and we appreciate that.”
Remember that Tavares signed a $77 million contract over seven seasons with the Maple Leafs in July 2018. He served as team captain from 2019 to 2024, before seeing star Auston Matthews inherit the role this summer.
In 473 games with the Maple Leafs, the 34-year-old athlete amassed 199 goals and 252 assists for 451 points.
