Romano Floriani Mussolini, great-grandson of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, scored the first goal of his career this Sunday, against Cesena. Supporters of his club, Juve Stabia, then celebrated with fascist salutes from the stands.
On paper it was an ordinary Serie B match. Except that the only goal of the match between Juve Stabia and Cesena was scored by Romano Floriani Mussolini, great-grandson of the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. A special goal, therefore, that Juve Stabia supporters celebrated with fascist salutes to accompany the name “Mussolini” that they chanted.
The player carries his father's Floriani name on a daily basis. But on his jersey, he decided to write “F. Mussolini”, the name of his mother Alessandra, former European deputy, and of his great-grandfather, founder of the first fascist militias of 1919. A choice which has many which is surprising, especially since the young defender indicated a few years ago that he did not care about his last name.
He plays in Serie B but belongs… to Lazio
Another strangeness of his career, although he currently plays at Juve Stabia, Romano Floriani Mussolini is only on loan from his club, Lazio Rome, some of whose ultra supporters are openly far-right and regularly singled out for fascist or Nazi salutes made in the stands or elsewhere.
When he arrived among the professionals at Lazio, his mother Alessandra tried to protect him from his last name. “There is nothing to comment on,” she said. “I prefer to stay away from that. My son does not want any form of interference in his life or his affairs.” But the player could now drag like a ball the choice to wear the name Mussolini on his jersey, and this celebration of the public to accompany his first career goal.
