It is in the heart of the Tarbes criminal court that the trial of a 20-year-old rugby player is taking place. The latter is on trial for “violence followed by permanent mutilation”, after having carried out a cathedral tackle which rendered the young Mathias Dantin quadriplegic in 2022.
It was before the Tarbes Criminal Court that Mathias Dantin decided to continue his fight. During a school match (UNSS) between two teams of high school students in December 2022 in Tarbes, the young man, 17 years old at the time, was the victim of a cathedral tackle, which plunged him into a coma for several days, before making him quadriplegic. Dependent on a wheelchair worth 35,000 euros in particular, Dantin has so far only been compensated to the tune of 20,000 euros by the UNSS. This is part things for which the Tarbais sued the author of the tackle that changed his life.
I don’t see how this can be unintentional.
At the end of the hearing this Tuesday, the public prosecutor requested a suspended prison sentence of 18 months against the 20-year-old young man, who carried out the dangerous act. The latter was an adult at the time of the events and is accused of “violence followed by permanent mutilation”. On the stand, Mathias Dantin spoke with these words: “I don’t see how this can be involuntary. This gesture goes beyond the scope of sport. I perceive it as an attack.” The verdict will be delivered on February 18, 2025.
