Angoulême: the Basseau football club is overflowing with children

The editorial team advises you

The club is a victim of the good press of its children and teenagers sections. “At the end of August I had twenty young people. The following week, around a hundred kids were there, remembers Muhammad Fodil, head of the football school. Parents know that we are offering something of quality. » Precariousness also pushes families to register their children. “We cost €0.50 per treatment – two hours of sport and snack – estimates the educator. We are cheaper than everyone else. » The other after-school care option, at Villa Mondésir by MJC Mosaïque, costs at least €8 per day.

Up to 80 non-licensees to manage

At the same time, the fire at the Mosaïque at the beginning of November, after that at the Basseau Residents’ House in June 2023, forced dozens of children into one of the few leisure spaces in the area. “Every event in the neighborhood has repercussions on us,” confirms Malik Diop, the president. Result: up to 80 young people, without a license, come to the sports plain on Wednesday, in addition to the 120 registered. “We try to accept everyone,” assures the president. Either by integrating the newcomers, or by “giving them a ball so that they can play alongside but, in this case, you have to be vigilant”.

Faced with this influx and with only seven or eight regular volunteers, the football school is struggling to maintain adequate supervision. “Today, I have one educator for ten children, in principle it’s one for five,” says Muhammad Fodil. It can go up to one to twenty. » Unmanageable.

The club, run by volunteers, is requesting support from the City. During a meeting earlier this week, Malik Diop raised the need for six paid positions. “There, I will be able to welcome everyone. » “We don’t beg,” insists Muhammad Fodil. But we provide a service and we need the means to do it correctly. » Its president agrees: “Of course the club has a social role, but I am president of a football club, not a leisure center. »

“We are going to put something in place from January,” replies Patrick Bourgoin, deputy mayor responsible for sports, without being able to reveal the details of the system.
