Highly publicized, the rape trial of former Grenoble players delivered its verdict on December 13 with heavy sentences handed down to Denis Coulson, Loïck Jammes, Rory Grice, Chris Farrell and Dylan Hayes. Their lawyers are now considering the follow-up to the procedure.
Trial of the ex-Grenoblois: what happens after the verdict
Between the facts and this decision rendered at first instance, no less than seven years had passed. And although this first verdict is a crucial step in the procedure, it is far from having come to an end.
Shocked by the severity of the sentences handed down to their clients, the defense lawyers were quick to announce their willingness to appeal the decision rendered by the Assize Court of Gironde, as reported The Team.
“A judicial decision is respected but it can be contested. We obviously believe in the innocence of our client. And we hope to be able to demonstrate it on appeal,” announced Jean-Félix Luciani, lawyer for Loïck Jammes.
Appeal and request for release
The question seems to arise on the side of Dylan Hayes and Chris Farrell who, with a reprieve for the first and an adjustable sentence for the second, avoided the worst. Both players, like their former partners, have a 10 day deadline to file an appeal.
On the other hand, do they have an interest in taking the risk of seeing their sentences increased? A waiting position could be considered, especially since if the main conviction for gang rape was overturned, theirs would subsequently fall.
Furthermore, the lawyers of Denis Coulson, Loïck Jammes and Rory Grice should this week file a request for the release of their clients with the Bordeaux investigating chamber. A hearing will then be held in around twenty days depending on The Teamand a decision rendered within a maximum of two months. During which the players will therefore remain in prison.
