Carter Verhaeghe scored the winning goal in the third period and the Florida Panthers won their first game against the Oilers since the Stanley Cup final 6-5 on Monday in Edmonton.

Sam Reinhart and Niko Mikkola totaled a goal and an assist in the victory. Jesper Boqvist, Matthew Tkachuk and Gustav Forsling also found the back of the net, while Sergei Bobrovsky made 25 saves.

For Boqvist, it was his first career shorthanded goal.

Zach Hyman scored a double for the local favorites. He has scored seven goals in six games since his return to play on December 5 after a five-game absence. Before this, he had been limited to three goals in 20 games.

Roope Hintz scored a double and the Stars ended the Washington Capitals’ four-game winning streak with a 3-1 win in Dallas.

Lian Bichsel was the other scorer for the Stars, threading the needle for a second time in his first three games on the circuit. Only Derian Hatcher, in 1991-1992, achieved this feat among all defensemen in the history of the organization.

Jason Robertson had two assists and Jake Oettinger stopped 25 pucks.

Dylan Strome was the only scorer for the Capitals, who suffered their first loss in regulation time in 10 games (8-1-1). A victory would have allowed them to equal their best start to the season after 30 games, established in 2015-2016 (22-6-2), and take first place in the overall NHL standings.

Former Montreal Canadiens goalie Charlie Lindgren gave up three times on 24 shots.
