Mathias “Zanka” Jorgensen had another difficult evening this Sunday with Anderlecht. But this time it’s not entirely his fault…
Let’s start with an observation: no, Zanka did not have a good match. The Dane was often out of position or late on the numerous Trudonnaire offensives, and missed several interventions. Perhaps it was Jorgensen’s habitual delay that misled the referee in the 67th minute.
At this point in the match, RSC Anderlecht already leads 0-2, and we say that it will be difficult for Sint-Truiden to come back. But when Ferrari accelerates, Zanka throws himself into the position of last man. His opponent collapses: Mr Dhondt takes out the red.
Looking back at the images from home, we quickly agree with the DAZN commentators: Zanka seems to have touched the ball, quite clearly, before Ferrari collapsed. There is therefore no red card, and quite simply no foul.
But the VAR, in Tubize, does not seem to agree. After several minutes, and while the Danish defender remained at the edge of the field repeating to the fourth referee that he had taken the ball, the exclusion was validated by the video and therefore by the central referee.
It’s hard to blame Mr Dhondt, who was not called by the video manager to judge for himself, and was therefore reassured in his initial decision taken at real speed. But Zanka, for his part, is likely to be suspended for the very important trip to Genk…
