André Villas-Boas coached OM between 2019 and 2021. The Portuguese technician obtained good results there, including a 2nd place which allowed the club to return to the Champions League. The technician enjoyed his time in Marseille, although it ended badly: “I only have good memories. There is the greatness of the club, all these emotions, positive or negative. This club means so much to people, it's the number 1 club in France, without a doubt. As it was one of the most beautiful things in my life, it was also one of the most painful. Leaving as I left, experiencing Covid there… The Vélodrome transmitted its strength to us. OM is the Vélodrome, it’s the atmosphere of the stadium. And I think that was why we were very weak in the second year. But it’s true that Ntcham was a real coup d’état that broke everything”he confided during an interview with The Team.
“I had already said no for this player”
The current president of FC Porto had no regrets following his hasty departure: “It wasn’t bloodshed!” It was a question of values. Everyone knows that when Pablo (Longoria) arrived, I decided to stay. Because I obviously loved the club. I had linked my future to Zubi (Andoni Zubizarreta, Editor's note), Zubi left (in May 2020) and I had a very strong discussion with Frank (McCourt, the owner of the club). One of the things that we had made sacred between us was that the decision to take a player had to be validated by all parties. I was not informed of the arrival and I had already said no for this player (Olivier Ntcham). That's why I submitted my resignation. Which later became a suspension. Which later became an agreement between the two parties (smiles). »
André Villas-Boas spent 60 matches on the Marseille bench. The Porto native achieved 29 wins, conceded 13 draws and 18 defeats.
