With a single punch, Frenchman Bruno Surace probably caused the biggest surprise in the world of boxing this year by beating Jaime Munguia on Saturday in Tijuana.
Trailing on the cards of the three judges after five rounds, Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) spoiled the return home of Munguia (44-2) by hitting him at the help from a right to the face launched in counter-attack. Surace had just four knockout victories before Saturday.
The athlete from Marseille thus became only the second boxer after Saul “Canelo” Álvarez to inflict a defeat on the former super-welterweight champion.
“I knew he was a good boxer. So we worked on our counter-attack, Surace said after the most important triumph of his career. He’s a true warrior. I want to thank him for the chance he gave me. It was a very big experience for me. »
With this defeat, the hopes of a fight against Christian Mbilli for the WBC interim super-middleweight title have definitely gone. Earlier this week, the WBC ordered a duel between the top two contenders for Álvarez’s belt.
