the first groundbreaking confirmed for January 2025

Supported by Town Hall, the redevelopment of the Beaublanc site will be one of the major projects of 2025 but also an issue in the future municipal campaign. For its last issue of 2024, Dimanche en Politique en Limousin takes stock of the calendar, financing and the sporting and political issues of this issue.

This will be one of the major projects of 2025 in Limoges and already a campaign argument for the 2026 municipal elections: the redevelopment of the Beaublanc site. Supported by Limoges Town Hall, it provides for an enlarged and modernized Sports Palace, a room dedicated to Limoges Handball, another room for CSP training but also a sports park for the general public.

To talk about it, Annaïck Demars receives:

  • Sylvie Rozettedeputy mayor of Limoges in charge of sports (LR)
  • Alain Aubardexecutive director of Limoges Handball, one of the 2 resident clubs of this future facility with Limoges CSP

The schedule announced by Sylvie Rozette provides for the first groundbreaking in January 2025, the start of the first period of work until 2027 in order to build “the two annex rooms“, then from 2027 to 2029 “the renovation of the Palais des Sports“.

Alain Aubard, executive director of LH: “The economy of any professional sports club is always a fragile economy, especially in the economic context which is not simple at the moment. Having a room that meets the needs of our partners and allows us to sell more places with hospitality is essential. If we don’t have that, both clubs will have no future

You have to find more than a gymexplains Alain Aubard, something must happen there that goes beyond sport: it’s a show with what we call a journey for the fans that is as pleasant as possible, that they come with their families, that we feel good there“.

Thierry Miguel, PS opposition elected official at town hall and vice-president of the Haute- departmental council, makes strong criticisms of the project: “I have the impression that this is the latest whim of a mayor, an unrealistic and irresponsible project. We are in a difficult period in terms of finances for town halls and we are being told of a 70 million project. For the moment, the departmental council will not participate in the financing. If we want there to be co-constructed projects and that is important in this constrained period, it is important that communities all work together on projects. Launching such a project one year before the municipal elections, perhaps leaving such a financial legacy to the successors of the current majority, it is better that this project does not happen.“.

Sylvie Rozette, deputy mayor in charge of sports (LR) denounces a “bad faith“and one”lack of knowledge of the City’s sporting issues and needs” from the elected socialist. She also contests the costing put forward: “The financial round has not been completed. Public money is a serious thing and at the moment it’s not easy, we don’t yet have the next finance law. What is certain is that we have had extremely sound management since 2014, we pay very close attention to our operating costs, which allows us to have interesting and solid gross savings which allows us to borrow at rates extremely reasonable so we are able to finance this project and not to the detriment of other projects (…) It’s a thoughtful, concerted, budgeted project, we’re at 56 million including tax.”

“We are not safe but beyond that, it is provisioned, assures the deputy mayor. Obviously we have to seek co-financing with Europe, with the State, but we can totally take on this project, otherwise we would be inconsistent“.
