The points system revised for 2025, victory reevaluated

Rarely has a decision been so unanimously against it. Established at the start of the season which has just ended, the new scale immediately proved complicated to explain and unfair. With its prizes available between Saturday evening and Sunday, it was possible that the winner of a rally would end the weekend with fewer points than the 2e and this happened several times. This loss of the value of victory was not at all an objective of the initiators of the project, but it was a negative consequence of what was sought: to revitalize Sundays. With a maximum of 12 points (7 for the last stage and 5 for the Power Stage), the goal was achieved. The end of the race was thrilling and had a major impact on the awarding of titles, because certain drivers were able to take advantage of it. Having taken into account the criticisms of the past months, the decision-makers have revised their copy in order to propose for 2025 a system which corrects the first version.

Only a maximum of 10 points on Sunday

The principle of continuing to animate the last days is retained, but the distribution will be less important. Only the first 5 in the stage (compared to 7 in 2024) will be rewarded with 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point while the Power Stage, the promoter’s true totem, will keep the same remuneration. In total, the competitor who achieves the success will pocket 10 pts (compared to 12 previously). They will be added to those registered at the end of the rally and no longer to those registered on Saturday evening. This allocation disappears to return to a classic scale awarded once the final podium has been reached with 25 points to the winner then 17, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1. At the end of an event, if a crew achieves the perfect score, they will be able to record a total of 35 units. Despite the changes and adjustments, it is still possible that the winner of the race will not be the one who leaves with the most points. If he does not enter anything on Sunday and on the 2nde takes the 10 pts in play (17+5+5=27).

« Revised format provides simplification by removing Saturday pointsexplained the FIA in its press release from Kigali in Rwanda. This reduces the chances of a rally winner scoring fewer points than the second-place competitor and continues to enhance the excitement and competitiveness of Sunday. The “Super Sunday” format will retain its role as a crucial day, while the Power Stage will remain a key element for broadcasters and fans. »

We must now see how the pilots will appropriate this system and see who will make the best use of it.
