For the first time this season, Bayern Munich lost in the league. Thanks to a double from Jae Sung Lee, Mainz won 2-1 against the Bavarians. A deserved defeat, according to Vincent Kompany. The Belgian technician who, however, wants to put this poor performance into perspective:
“We have no excuse. We probably didn’t play our best football today. Yes, we fought, but we didn’t show as many good things as in other matches. But everything is not to be thrown away: it is up to us to ensure that we finish the year well at home“, assured Kompany after the meeting.
Bayer is coming back very well
With 33 points on the clock, Bayern Munich remains at the top of the Bundesliga, but sees Bayer Leverkusen come back four points. The reigning champion won 2-0 on the pitch at FC Augsburg, notably with a new goal from Florian Wirtz, his sixth in the Bundesliga this season.
After a mixed start to the season, Bayer is back and wants to be dangerous again, as midfielder Granit Xhaka confirmed:
“Maybe from the outside we think it’s normal, that everything goes without saying. But really, we worked hard to get here. And that translates into good results. Our thirst for victories has returned, we manage to outrun the opponent. We have done a good job over the last few months“, said Xhaka.
In third place, we find Eintracht Frankfurt with 27 points. Eintracht which sees RB Leipzig return to the level of points following its 2-1 success against the Eagles, precisely.
Seven teams in three points
Behind this quartet, we find a multitude of teams which are held by only a few points. Winner 3-2 of Wolfsburg on Friday evening, Friborg is in fifth place with 24 points, a length ahead of Stuttgart, who won 3-1 on the Heidenheim pitch.
Mainz is seventh with 22 points, just like Dortmund, who conceded a draw in the last minutes against Hoffenheim, final score 1-1. A new poor performance for the BvB which quite irritated coach Nuri Sahin:
“It’s very disappointing. I am very disappointed. This must not happen. This isn’t the first time this has happened to us. I’m extremely upset“, said the former Dortmund midfielder after the draw.
Dortmund, which has the same number of points as Werder Bremen (2-0 winner in Hamburg at FC Sankt-Pauli), and a step ahead of Wolfsburg as well as Borussia Mönchengladbach, 4-1 winner of Kiel.
A mess of shocks to end the year
At the bottom of the standings, Bochum took a point from Berlin on the Union pitch, final score 1-1. This is VfL’s third point this season.
