Berlin and the North American American Football League announced this Wednesday in a press release that the Berlin Olympic Stadium will host three NFL regular season matches in 2025, 2027 and 2029.
The Berlin Olympic Stadium will host a total of three NFL regular season matches in the fall of 2025, 2027 and 2029, the North American American Football League and the German capital announced in a joint press release on Wednesday. The exact date of the 2025 meeting and the two franchises involved will be announced later. Germany hosted NFL matches for the first time in the fall of 2022 in Munich at the Allianz Arena, between the Seattle Seahawks and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the legend of the discipline, Tom Brady, in front of nearly 70,000 spectators . In the fall of 2023, Frankfurt’s Waldstadion hosted two matches (Miami Doplhins against Kansas City Chiefs, and Indianapolis Colts against New England Patriots), and a month ago, the meeting between the New York Giants and the Carolina Panthers took place in Munich.
“Germany has a rich tradition with American football and the NFL has a history with the city of Berlin,” said Roger Goodell, boss of the NFL. Built for the 1936 Olympic Games and renovated for the 2006 World Cup, the Berlin Olympic Stadium can hold 74,500 spectators. Since its renovation, the stadium has hosted the final of the 2006 World Cup and Euro-2024, the final of the 2015 Champions League as well as the 2009 World Athletics Championships. The NFL has been relocating regular season matches since 2009, first to London, then to Mexico (from 2016), then to Germany, and most recently in 2024 to Brazil. Starting with the 2025 season, up to eight regular season matches can be played abroad. For 2025, two will be played in London, one in Madrid, and one in Berlin. Other host cities may be announced at a later date, the NFL said.
