The team that drafts Matthew Schaefer at the 2025 amateur auction will get its hands on the best defensive prospect since a certain Cale Makar.
This is what Nicolas Cloutier said Tuesday during his appearance on the show JiC. Our journalist already believes in December that he has a very good idea of the identity of the player who will be drafted first this summer in Los Angeles, even if the fight promises to be very interesting.
“In my opinion, he is the one who will come out in first place this summer,” said the man who put together a special file on the best prospects for the next National Hockey League draft.
“He’s the best defensive prospect since Cale Makar in 2017.”
“Usually, I really don’t like it when we systematically compare the best offensive defenseman in junior hockey to Makar, but in the case of Matthew Schaefer, I don’t have that discomfort. An OHL coach told me that he had never seen a defender like him in Ontario and that he was a generational defender.
