A hockey player from a Saskatchewan senior hockey league suffered a significant injury after being cut by a skate near the throat Saturday evening.
According to what the Regina Leader Post, Cole Cusitar suffered a significant cut below his jaw after a scuffle with a player from the opposing team following a faceoff.
The 35-year-old was quickly treated by the on-site medical team and then rushed to hospital.
“Across the arena, you could hear everyone shouting, ‘Call 911!’” Jonathan Jenson, Cusitar’s teammate with the Churchbridge Imperials, told CBC. According to him, there was a lot of blood on the icy surface.
The cut, which required 80 stitches to close, started under the chin and extended to the ear.
As of Sunday evening, Cusitar was still in hospital, but out of danger, according to information released by the Sask East Hockey League.
Following the injury, the Imperials players indicated that they would all wear a neck protector to prevent another situation like this.
Several leagues across the country are now requiring the wearing of neck protectors following the death in England of former NHL player Adam Johnson at the age of 29. The latter had suffered a laceration to the neck during a match and then succumbed to his injuries.
