Resistance is being organized… surely too late.
The Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) announced on Tuesday that it will vote against the award of hosting rights for the 2030 and 2034 World Cups. while officially criticizing the application process in a letter to FIFA, according to Reuters. Votes to validate the candidacies for the 2030 and 2034 World Cups will take place this Wednesday during a virtual FIFA congress. However, the two competitions have only one candidacy in the running: that of Morocco, Spain and Portugal for 2030, and that of Saudi Arabia for 2034. The mass seems already said.
Opacity, when you hold us
The NFF stated that “ aBefore the congress, the Norwegian Football Federation repeatedly expressed concerns about FIFA’s process for awarding the 2030 and 2034 World Cups ». For the Norwegian body, it is impossible to support a process that it considers to be « defective and incompatible with the principles of FIFA’s internal reforms ». Lise Klaveness, the president of the NFF, explained that « Wednesday’s vote is not about who will host the 2030 and 2034 World Cups – that has already been decided. The committee’s assessment is that this process is not consistent with the principles of a sound and predictable system of governance.”.
The NFF points to another major problem: respect for human rights: « FIFA’s human rights and due diligence guidelines have not been sufficiently integrated into the process, increasing the risk of human rights violations. » This echoes demands from Amnesty International and the Sport & Rights Alliance which recently called on FIFA to halt the process of selecting Saudi Arabia as host of the 2034 World Cup unless substantial reforms on the human rights are put in place before the vote.
Failing to participate, Norway can look at itself in the mirror.
