After another difficult outing Sunday afternoon against the Boston Bruins, Cayden Primeau woke up Monday morning late alone in the very last place in the National Hockey League.
Among goaltenders who have played a reasonable number of season games, Primeau has the worst efficiency rate, at .844.
Before the game against the Bruins, he was tied with Spencer Martin of the Carolina Hurricanes, but the American goalkeeper now finds himself alone in the abyss of the circuit.
On Sunday, Primeau surrendered five times on 29 shots, allowing three goals in the span of just 70 seconds during the first period.
After 10 games, he also has a record of 2-3-1 and a goals against average of 4.45.
The Habs’ weak defense is to blame, but it should be noted that Samuel Montembeault has compiled much more impressive statistics in front of the same squad this season.
The Bécancour native has a record of 6-10-2, a goals against average of 3.12 and an efficiency rate of .897.
In terms of advanced statistics, the gap is obvious between the two goalkeepers. The figures show that Montembeault has “given” 0.7 goals to the opponent since the start of the campaign. Primeau gifted 7.5 goals to the other team.
Since last year, Primeau has been eligible for waivers and this is what prompted the organization to opt for a menage a trois with Jake Allen in 2023-2024.
The decision to send him to Laval is therefore delicate for the Canadiens, even if Jakub Dobes stands out with the Laval Rocket in the American League.
