Vrancken in the referee’s locker room: stolen from Anderlecht?

If Ghent remained on a 5-0 victory against Standard before the break, they knew it would not be as easy to win at Lotto Park.

Sporting quickly confirmed this by taking the lead via Rits after 23 minutes. Edozie would follow before Torunarigha was excluded on the buffalo side. Three minutes later, Dolberg made it 3-0.

Disputed phases

In the second half, it was up to Matisse Samoise to be sent off in the 75th minute. Dolberg took advantage again two minutes later to make it 4-0. Anderlecht then rolled forward and scored two more goals.

And if Wouter Vrancken had a smile during his post-match speech, it was a cynical smile that the Ghent coach displayed. A coach who went to the referee’s office to explain the progress of the match and the decisions deemed contentious.

Explanations with the referee

“20 minutes after the match, as stipulated in the rules, I went with my PC to the referee’s dressing room to show him the two disputed phases. I took my PC rather than my phone so that the screen was very big,” Vrancken explains.

And Vrancken returns to the contentious phases in question: “For me, Coosemans is the only one who must be excluded. Torunarigha touches the ball on the tackle on Edozie. The referee told me that Colin’s shirt pulling is too light and regarding Torunarigha, he said: ‘If you forget the fact that he touched the ball…’ But we must not forget that!

The coach who concludes by returning to the expulsion of Samoise, which also should not have taken place according to Vrancken, who considered that the yellow was sufficient: “And even Samoise did not deserve the red. When you whistle so badly , you just give a yellow for such an action.”
