Chapter 6: The golden age of hosiery
For the Grenoble reception, we are opening a new historical chapter with the golden age of hosiery!
???? Small historical point:
The history of the manufacture of knitted cotton caps begins with the invention of the knitting machine by the Englishman William Lee in 1589. In the city of Troyes, Jean de Mauroy, size controller and Aides of the Kingdom, created in 1745 the first factory of knitted stockings at the Hospital de la Trinité where poor children were taken in.
In 1770, Troyes already had 40 hosiers. In 1834, the town alone employed around 10,000 cotton hosiery trades and 12,000 workers, for an annual product of 7,000,000 francs. Until the 1980s, Troyes was considered the capital of hosiery. This is how the city saw the creation of numerous textile companies such as Dim, Petit Bateau, Lacoste and Garçon Français.
????️ The Stadium fan zone redesigned
