When we look at the 2024-25 CH season so far, we can see it in two ways: we can see the team that is at the bottom of the NHL standings… but we can also see the team who has been playing much better hockey in recent days.
Hockey which comes a little closer to what the managers hoped for when talking about the famous mix… and indeed, let’s talk about it, about this mix.
Right now, the Canadiens are in last place in the East, which isn’t exactly a good way to be in the playoffs. That said, seeing Samuel Montembeault regain his game recently is a positive sign… and it means that the club is no longer alone in last place.
He is getting closer to a few clubs that are in front of him.
And that’s interesting in light of where the Eastern Conference is very tight at the moment. In fact, on paper, CH is only three points away from a playoff spot… and they have a game in hand over the Bruins.
It’s obviously more complicated than that because there are seven other teams to consider, but the Canadian is not buried.
Obviously, to explain the setbacks of CH, we can think of the defense, but we can think of the performances of the goalkeepers.
The good news is that things are happening again for Montembeault, who is one of the goalies of the week in the NHL… but this is not the case for Cayden Primeau.
And when we look at the statistics of the goalkeeper, who only has one victory this season, we say to ourselves that if he did his job, CH would possibly be #InTheMix right now.
We can look at this in two ways. On the one hand, we can say that Primeau is partly responsible for the fact that his club is behind the other teams in the East at the moment. If we replace one of its defeats with a victory, we notice that CH would only be one point away from the playoffs.
Again, it’s early in the season…but you get the point.
On the other hand, however, we can say that despite everything that has been said about CH at the moment, the club is perhaps only down to one quality #2 goalkeeper (or, the limit, correct) to be a competitive training. Obviously, this is a problem that will have to be resolved… but if we see it like that, the state of the Habs suddenly becomes much more reassuring.
Will Martin St-Louis give Montembeault more games to try to give his club a chance to be in the playoff race? We can wonder, especially since he is on fire… but if the club wants to be in the playoffs, it will take better performances from Primeau. Or Connor Hughes, for example, if the Canadian wants to try to stir his soup.
