There is no return to play in sight for Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Frederik ANdersen.
Head coach Rod Brind’Amour said Friday that Andersen was going to be sidelined “much longer” than the weekly evaluation status he was initially given on Oct. 31.
The injury ended a strong start to the season for Andersen, who is 3-1-0 with a .941 save percentage and a 1.49 goals-against average.
The 35-year-old netminder was limited to just 16 games last year due to blood clots. He maintained a 13-2-0 record with a .932 save percentage and a 1.84 goals-against average. He is completing the final year of his contract at an average annual salary of $3.4 million.
With Andersen’s extended absence, the Hurricanes will rely heavily on Pyotr Kochetkov, but his presence on Saturday is uncertain against the Ottawa Senators, after leaving Wednesday’s game against Utah,
Kochetkov is 8-2-0 with an .897 save percentage and a 2.56 goals-against average this season.
Brind’Amour said the team will likely recall a goalie before Saturday’s game and that Spencer Martin is likely to start.
In two games, Martin has a record of 0-1-0 as well as an efficiency percentage of .806 and a goals against average of 5.19.
