The United Nations General Assembly has just adopted by consensus a draft resolution which highlights the contribution of sport to the promotion of sustainable development and peace in the world.
Presented by Qatar and Monaco, this text underlines the importance of sport, not only as a vector of physical and mental development, but also as a driver of sustainable development on a global scale.
According to the initiators of the resolution, sport embodies universal values such as respect, solidarity and equality, with transformative potential to promote sustainable development and build peace.
It also promotes social development and offers “returns on investment” particularly in the field of education, in accordance with Sustainable Development Goal No. 4 (SDG), underlined the representative of Monaco which has been designated world capital. of Sport in 2025.
Entitled “Sport, a factor of sustainable development”, the resolution encourages all parties concerned to promote and encourage the exploitation of sport for sustainable development. It is also about strengthening education, particularly physical education, for children and young people, including people with disabilities and people living with rare diseases.
The text also recommends including sport, education and quality physical activity in national sustainable development strategies and effectively exploiting all the possibilities offered by sport and its values for the purposes in particular of the implementation of 2030 Agenda, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and combating the harmful effects of climate change.
