The Missouri organization nonetheless hopes Butker will be back in time for the playoffs, a source familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The Chiefs are expected to sign Spencer Shrader, who is currently on the New York Jets’ practice squad, the source added.

The Chiefs (9-0) will visit the Buffalo Bills (8-2) on Sunday. This duel could have a major impact on the playoff race in the American Association.

Butker, who entered the NFL in 2017, ranks third in NFL history in field goal success rate, which is nearly 90%. Only Justin Tucker and Eddy Pineiro are ahead of him.

The Chiefs kicker has made 18 of his 20 field goal attempts this season. He notably gave his team the 26-25 victory, against the Cincinnati Bengals, with a 51-yard field goal in the last second of play.

Butker also holds the record for longest field goal in Chiefs history, which is 62 yards against the Bills in 2022.
