Washington Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery didn’t look happy after his team blew a two-goal third-period lead Wednesday to an overtime loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Capitals, who never trailed in regulation, allowed two goals in the final four minutes and nine seconds of the third period, seeing the Maple Leafs force overtime. John Tavares scored the winning goal.
“The way the meeting went, it’s just embarrassing,” Carbery said. Our team was unrecognizable. »
“We are playing against a team that is playing a second game in two nights. Our play in the third period and losing a two-goal lead…embarrassing. »
The Maple Leafs made a strong push in the third period, even seeing two goals denied to them. Steven Lorentz had his goal disallowed when it was determined he used his leg to push the puck past Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson. Matthew Knies also had a goal disallowed due to a high stick. Coach Craig Berube said after the game that he thought both goals should have been allowed.
“Lorentz’s goal, I don’t understand the decision,” Berube said. If you read the rules, a motion to kick the puck is with one skate. It wasn’t a skate. It was a leg warmer. I don’t understand. »
Berube gave his team credit for their persistence in the face of adversity.
On the other hand, the Capitals were outshot and outshot 17-7 by Toronto.
“We started making unacceptable plays that we don’t normally make and everything fell apart,” Aliaksei Protas said. We had chances to close the books and we didn’t do it. It’s our fault. We must move forward and learn from this. »
“Obviously we felt like we were up 3-1,” added Dylan Strome. We made mistakes. »
Wednesday’s loss dropped the Capitals to 10-4-1 this season and 7-2-1 at home, while the Leafs are 10-6-2.
