Stijn Vreven’s coaching career has already seen some surprising twists and turns in recent years. His last mission in Belgium ended just under a year ago, when he left Ostend in December 2023. The former Red Devil then chose to take on a major challenge.
Vreven leaves Lithuania after six months
Indeed, in May, Vreven joined FK Panevezys, a club in the Lithuanian first division. This club won the national title in 2023, but was in a relegation position when our compatriot took office after 15 days.
He also brought an old acquaintance to Lithuania during the summer with Amine Benchaib (ex-Lokeren, -Charleroi and -Kortrijk). In the end, Vreven managed to keep Panevezys… on the edge. After a 0-0 against TransINVEST Vilnius last weekend, his team ultimately finished in eighth place out of 10 teams, just two points above the relegation line.
Looking for a new challenge
This was not enough to convince Panevezys to continue the partnership. Despite the fact that Vreven’s contract still ran until the end of 2025, the club announced his departure after just six months. Vreven will therefore have to look for a new challenge.
In recent years he has coached Esperanza Neerpelt, Dessel Sport, Lommel, Waasland-Beveren, NAC Breda, Beerschot-Wilrijk, Lokeren, AS Trencin, Dessel again and ‘Ostend. As a player he played for KV Mechelen, Gent, FC Utrecht, Kaiserslautern, Vitesse Arnhem and Sint-Truiden, among others. He was also capped twice with the Red Devils.
