Protesters gathered in Dam Square in the city center, wearing kaffiyehs and chanting slogans. Those arrested were taken to buses waiting nearby, AFP correspondents noted.

This banned demonstration comes six days after attacks on Israeli supporters on the sidelines of a football match in Amsterdam. Authorities reported five people briefly hospitalized. These attacks, described as anti-Semitic in particular by Israel and the Dutch authorities, aroused indignation in many Western capitals.

Other violence was committed Monday evening in Amsterdam. A tram was set on fire with fireworks, a car and several bicycles were vandalized, police officers were targeted and anti-Semitic remarks were chanted. An investigation was opened and several people were arrested after these events.
