Ovechkin vs. Gretzky: the fight is now unequal

Alex Ovechkin is capturing people’s imagination thanks to this frantic race towards the goals record (894) belonging to Wayne Gretzky. If he avoids the infirmary, a place he has rarely visited in his career, and if he continues at this pace, he will become the top scorer in NHL history in 2025.

At the time of composing these few lines, the Tsar of the Washington Capitals has ten goals in 14 games on the clock. His net total is now 863, 31 fewer than The Wonder at number 99. 31 goals to score in 68 games, it’s a walk in the park for number 8.

We must make one thing clear, however. The fight from 35 years and over remains completely unequal, since the captain of Reds is a war machine, which still threads the needle excessively despite advancing age. Like good wine, Ovechkin is even more succulent with age.
