Eric Engels already sees Lane Hutson as the next Canadiens captain

Nick Suzuki is the captain of the Canadiens and his position does not appear to be in danger. He is the most complete player on the team and seems to be a unifier, without being very extroverted.

The debate about the next captain is therefore not something that we really think about, except that Eric Engels already has his own idea of the next leader of the CH.

Passing through Sick Podcast by Tony Marinaro, Monday night, Engels constantly threw flowers at defender Lane Hutson. This is the player he sees wearing a “C” on his jersey in the future.

However, this is just a suggestion. Engels did not say that Suzuki should tear the “C” off his jersey tomorrow morning to give it to Hutson, far from it.

What Engels means is that the young CH defender demonstrates great qualities in his game. He plays with discipline, unlike several other players who have his talent and who practice the same style of play as him.

It’s useful to make small feints to outwit the opponent, but in just 18 games in the NHL, Hutson has already shown that he understands that this strategy is not always the solution. He makes smart choices.

However, it’s a little weird to see Engels talking about Hutson as a potential captain when the youngster only has 18 games under his belt in the NHL. We agree that he is going in the right direction, but we must still be wary of expectations for a recruit.

Engels, however, found an excellent sequence to demonstrate the intelligence of Hutson’s game.

During Monday’s game against the Sabres, Hutson allowed the Canadian to keep the puck in the opponent’s zone and used his vision of the game to spot Emil Heineman, who was in an excellent position to take a dangerous shot.

He didn’t need to play lace, or thwart three players to get there. The defender was only intelligent in the sequence, which allowed CH to score an important goal.

We should therefore not expect to see Lane Hutson become the captain of the Canadiens in the coming seasons, but the young defenseman is proving that he has the necessary qualities to be a leader on the ice.

In burst

– The Canadian is not ready.

– Two guys who like each other.

– Defeats teach lessons.

– Another accusation for him.
