Taylor Fritz got off to a dream start at the ATP Finals in Turin. The American dominated Daniil Medvedev 6-4 6-3 in the opening match of the Ilie Nastase group.
Semi-finalist in 2022 for his only previous participation in this Masters, Fritz gave the Russian no chance in a meeting which lasted only 80 minutes. Uncompromising in his commitment (9 aces, 0 double faults), he did not concede a single service game, erasing the four break points he faced.
Daniil Medvedev was very vulnerable when he put into play. He certainly slammed 8 aces but committed just as many double faults, conceding a break in each set against the finalist of the last US Open. And he only won 14 points in total on his opponent’s serve.
Medvedev, who conceded the first set with a series of three double faults, broke down after dropping his serve in the sixth game of the second set. He thus received a penalty point and, at 4-2 40/0 for his opponent, he pretended to receive the opponent’s service by holding his racket by the sieve.
Thanks to this victory, Taylor Fritz has perhaps already taken an option on qualification for the semi-finals in a group which seems promised to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. He will face on Tuesday the winner of the duel scheduled for Sunday evening between Sinner and the Australian Alex De Minaur.
