Aston Villa were beaten 1-0 in Bruges in the Champions League by conceding a penalty-gag on an error of judgment by their defender Tyrone Mings.
In the 52nd minute, Villa benefited from an ordinary six-yarder, played sluggishly by Argentinian goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez towards his defender Mings in the area. Mings obviously did not understand that the ball was in play, stooped down and picked it up in his hand to bring it back to the six-yard corner, in order to play the return.
German referee Tobias Stieler, initially surprised, appeared to communicate with his video assistant, then pointed to the penalty spot. Hans Vanaken was quick to score the only goal of the match. Villa, who led the single group at the start of the 4th day of the league phase, with 3 victories in 3 matches, fell in the standings, 3 points behind the leader, Liverpool (12 points).
Bruges, under whose jersey international Ardon Jashari played the entire game, signed its second victory, for two defeats.
