Aryna Sabalenka (WTA 1) won her second match at the WTA Masters in Riyadh. The Belarusian beat the Italian Jasmine Paolini (WTA 4) 6-3 7-5.
She dismissed two second set balls before making the decision. She will be sure to end the year at the top of the hierarchy if she also wins in her last part of the purple group against the Kazakh Elena Rybakina, already eliminated from the race for the last four. Aryna Sabalenka has already qualified for the semi-finals in Riyadh.
Zheng Qinwen, the Olympic champion from Paris, opened the day by beating Rybakina 7-6 (7/4) 3-6 6-1 after a 2h24 match.
In the decisive set, Zheng broke first, at 2-1, thanks to a long-line backhand return. She confirmed this break with a shutout to lead 4-1. Unlike the first set, Rybakina did not manage to come back this time, losing for the first time against the Chinese in three confrontations.
