Victor Wembanyama was very close to achieving a triple-double, within one block, but ended up losing with the San Antonio Spurs in Los Angeles in the Clippers’ lair (113-104) on Monday in the NBA.
There will be no threes, not yet, for the San Antonio Spurs. After two consecutive successes in the NBA, the Texan franchise of Victor Wembanyama was unable to continue against the Clippers of James Harden (17 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists) and Nicolas Batum (3 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists), victorious 113-104. The Spurs had, however, got off to a magnificent start (40-14 after the first quarter!), but ended up losing against the Clippers from afar (19 out of 37 at 51%).
The French phenomenon Victor Wembanyama was still quite clumsy shooting (9 of 22, 2 of 9 from three points), but his versatility and activity allowed him to finish as the match’s top scorer with 24 points, in addition to having accumulated 13 rebounds, 9 blocks, 3 assists and 3 interceptions.
Authoritarian…and spectacular
He only missed one block in “Wemby” to validate his third triple-double in the NBA, he who had already achieved the feat of achieving one with points, rebounds and blocks, a rare performance , in February.
The giant (2.24 m), best NBA blocker last season, was authoritarian in the Spurs racket. He accumulated more “blocks” (9) alone than all the Clippers combined (7), making life difficult for Croatian Ivica Zubac (17 points, 13 rebounds), pushed back several times by the Frenchman.
The 20-year-old Frenchman also brought the audience at the new Intuit Dome to their feet with some spectacular actions, including two one-handed dunks on an alley-oop after a serve from Chris Paul. Enough to bring back good memories to Clippers fans, who a few years ago enjoyed the services of the leader (in the team from 2011 to 2017) for the powerful Blake Griffin.
