The FIA has released its conclusions on the investigation into the two Mercedes F1 drivers at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Brackley’s team was accused of changing the tire pressures of the cars when the wheels were already fitted to the cars.
Team representatives were called in to explain this broken procedure, and the fact that the race procedure, as well as the timing of the day, was chaotic, helped make race preparation more straightforward. confused.
“After the start of the race was interrupted, 10 minutes’ notice was immediately given for the new start. Taking into account the configuration of the circuit and the access point to the grid from the pit lane, the time required for the team to get to the grid has been extended” wrote the FIA.
“The gate to the grid was not opened immediately. The FIA recognized that, given this short delay, it was extremely difficult, if not impossible, for the teams to follow the procedure prescribed by the technical directive .”
This is what pushed the federation to consider this as an extenuating circumstance: “Given the unusual circumstances surrounding the compressed schedule, the interrupted start, the logistics of access to the grid and taking into account the technical delegate’s stipulation that the tire pressures were within the correct parameters, the stewards determine that a fine for breach of procedure is appropriate in this case.”
“Normally, an infraction of this nature, during a competitive session, would result in a sporting penalty, but this is not appropriate in this case. However, this decision should not be taken as a precedent for any similar offense in the future, as the circumstances are considered unique.”
