Lando Norris ended his weekend at the Brazilian GP very poorly with only 6th place in the race, in the rain.
While starting from pole position, the McLaren driver lost his footing at the start and then in the rain. And his chances were then dashed when Verstappen and the Alpine F1 drivers were able to change tires for free under a red flag.
“It’s all about losing position. We were just penalized by the red flag with the free pit stop for the others, so it’s unfortunate, nothing more.”
“George Russell was a victim too, he was in front of me, he probably felt like he won the race today and he probably deserved to win the race today more than anyone else, but sometimes it’s just bad luck and the rules are against you.”
“So a difficult day, I made a few mistakes which cost me dearly against George and against Charles. Nothing more. It was a difficult day, I did my best. I made a lot of good races, it’s about time something went wrong.”
He must go to the commissioners for an infraction during the aborted start. Why did you leave?
“It’s something I have to look at with the team.”
As for the decision to stop after initially saying no to go in on lap 25, he responds: “I trust the team, what they say and they trust me.”
“It was just bad luck. I don’t care about hindsight, it was luck for them that red flag, nothing more. They were lucky with a rule that no one is bothered with “They probably agreed with her, but all pilots have in the past.”
“Today it was good for them, it could have been good for us if we had stayed on track, but it’s a stupid thing. Just a bit of bad luck today, nothing more. Of course, It’s disappointing.”
“Max drove well, he was a bit lucky, but that’s life.”
Note that Lando Norris must absolutely regain points from Max Verstappen (at least 3) in Las Vegas if he wants to postpone the title deadline in Qatar. But with 62 points behind out of a maximum possible 86, it seems very difficult now.
Oscar Piastri followed his leader but had a 10-second penalty added to his race time for hitting Liam Lawson during the race. He is finally ranked 8th.
“It was deserved, I didn’t go far enough and hit the back of his car. I apologized during the break. It was a tough day.”
“It was tricky, I wanted to stay on the track but it was very difficult. We will have to rewatch the race.”
