Surprise in Bahrain. A few hours after the finish of the final race of the 2024 World Endurance Championship season, the classification for the 8 Hours of Bahrain has changed. Initially second behind the No. 8 Toyota of Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa, the No. 51 Ferrari of Antonio Giovinazzi, Alessandro Pier Guidi and James Calado was penalized after the checkerboard.
The cause? The Italian manufacturer used two extra tires on this car compared to the 26 provided for by the regulations (28 therefore) for the weekend. The car was therefore penalized with two two-minute stop-and-gos, for a total of four minutes.
This sanction, not applicable during the race, was transformed into 2 laps removed plus 1’10″890 added to the race time. With such a sanction, the No. 51 Ferrari falls to last place in the Hypercar category, two laps behind the winner.
Consequence: the #93 Peugeot of Jean-Eric Vergne, Stoffel Vandoorne and Mikkel Jensen, fourth at the finish, inherits third place on the podium ahead of the #35 Alpine of Jules Gounon, Paul-Loup Chatin and Ferdinand Habsburg.
