After three victories in the medley races, the four-time French Olympic champion settled for a 2nd place in the 200m freestyle in Singapore. He still won the World Cup event.
Event: Léon Marchand did not win a swimming race. Irresistible for three days in the small pool of Singapore – world record in the 200m medley, European record in the 100m medley and victory in the 400m medley – the quadruple Olympic champion was beaten this Saturday during his last race this World Cup weekend.
Aligned in the 200m freestyle, the French swimmer finished 2nd in 1’40”91, behind the British Duncan Scott, impressive winner in 1’39”83, but ahead of the Chinese Pan Zhanle, Olympic champion in the 100m freestyle in Paris.
Despite the defeat, Léon Marchand, unplayable at his preferred distances, still won the general classification of the World Cup, becoming the first Frenchman to achieve this performance. The 22-year-old from Toulouse pockets a bonus of 100,000 dollars in the process. That’s what we call a successful week.
