The Laval Rocket continued its streak of success by beating the Providence Bruins 2-1 on Friday night at Place Bell.
This is the third time in its history that the Rocket has won six times in a row.
Jared Davidson and Owen Beck were the scorers. Logan Mailloux got an assist in his return to the lineup after recording three points in five games with the Montreal Canadiens.
Backup goaltender Connor Hughes was a key part of this victory in keeping his team in the game by making 27 saves, notably frustrating the Bruins six times on the power play. To add insult to injury, Beck hit the target short of a man early in the third period.
Despite a loss to the Springfield Thunderbirds in the first weekend of the season, Hughes is doing a good job in his first professional season in North America. The 28-year-old goaltender now has three wins, including one by shutout with a save percentage around .940.
This is reassuring news in front of the net, while goalkeeper Jakub Dobes is nursing a lower body injury. His case is being evaluated on a daily basis, which means he could be available as early as Saturday.
Dobes had an excellent start to the campaign with four wins in as many games, a goals against average of 2.25 and a save percentage of .910.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow.
Forward Alex Barré-Boulet was also unavailable. He skipped the Rocket’s training session Friday morning to undergo a day of treatment related to a recurring lower-body injury.
Barré-Boulet joined the Rocket on October 18 against the Syracuse Crunch and was the star of a 5-2 victory in the home opener thanks to a two-goal, two-assist performance.
He leads the team in scoring with eight points, including six assists, in five games. He has a plus-3 defensive ratio.
The Rocket and the Bruins faced each other for the second time this season. The two clubs crossed swords in Providence on October 11, and the Laval team scored a 5-2 victory.
