“Where’s Rutger?” », Winnipeg Jets fans taunt their former prospect

A quiet Sunday in the NHL with only three games on the menu, including an afternoon game in Winnipeg between the Jets and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Jets remained undefeated, extending their record to five wins with a 6-3 triumph.

Now, you’re wondering why I’m telling you about the Jets’ game against the Penguins? Well, we were able to witness a rather funny moment during the game when the Manitoban crowd began to loudly chant “Where is Rutger?” » (“ Where is Rutger? »).

Rutger McGroarty is a prospect that the Jets drafted 14th overall in the first round of the 2022 draft. The problem was that McGroarty didn’t want to sign a rookie contract with the Jets and asked to be traded. His wish was finally granted in August when he was traded to the Penguins.

The forward has never been clear on the reasons which led him to request a trade, he who mainly insisted on the fact of wanting to play quickly on a regular basis in the NHL.

However, we know that McGroarty was sent back to the American League by the Penguins, which is still ironic if that is why he requested his trade. As my colleague Marc-Olivier Cook says, this is reminiscent of Yaroslav Askarov’s situation with the Sharks.

Let’s say that it didn’t take much for the Winnipeg fans who took the opportunity to taunt their former prospect, pointing out the fact that he was not participating in today’s game.

Jets fans therefore father a player absent from the match insisting that he was not playing. Could it be that the fans have a poop on their hearts? I would say yes.

However, it is understandable. Winnipeg is a small market and not necessarily a particularly exciting place for NHL players, but it must be particularly frustrating to see prospects refuse to want to play with the team for any reason.

I think the fans found a way that was still sloppy, but not mean, to demonstrate their frustration. And I think McGroarty can expect to get a few boos from the crowd if he’s ever in Winnipeg with an NHL team.
