the Belgian press disappointed after yet another defeat against “pale French”

The French team once again got the better of Belgium on Monday evening in the Nations League (2-1). The Blues thus continue their good series against the Red Devils… and further stun a completely disillusioned Belgian press.

History repeats itself. Again and again. Monday evening, the team won on the Belgian pitch on the fourth day of the Nations League (2-1). The Blues defeated the Red Devils thanks to a double from Randal Kolo Muani (35th, 62nd), while Loïs Openda equalized just before the break (45th + 3).

>> Relive Belgium-France (1-2)

For Didier Deschamps’ men, this is the third victory in just over three months against the Belgians. The Tricolores had indeed beaten their neighbors in the round of 16 of the last Euro (1-0, July 1) and during the second day of the same League of Nations (2-0, September 9).

Saliba’s cataclysmic match, Kolo Muani man of the match… the evaluation after Belgium-France – 14/10

In official matches, the drought even extends over more than 40 years, with a last victory for Belgium dating back to qualifying for the 1982 World Cup, on September 9, 1981 (2-0). In the recent past, the victory of the Blues in the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup (1-0) remains in everyone’s memory, as does, to a lesser extent, the crazy match during the Final Four of the Nations League 2021 (3-2 victory for France).

The Belgian press once again criticizes the game of the Blues

After this new setback, the Belgian press is therefore somewhat bitter. Worse: she even seems helpless. “What if the football gods did not want a victory for the Devils in an official match against France in the 21st century?” wonders L’Avenir, which also evokes “a source of endless frustration” and “an awkwardness like a missed penalty by Tielemans mixed with a cruel lack of success.

“Always the same song: the Red Devils cannot break the French curse,” insists Het Nieuwsblad, which nevertheless underlines “the strong impression” left by the Belgians. Across Quiévrain, the press in fact highlights the hyper-pragmatism of the French, who would have prevailed against the course of the game. A criticism that comes tirelessly to each France-Belgium, as during the last Euro, when the Belgian media had deplored “French cynicism” and “a parody of football”.

“A new defeat against more realistic Blues. Like an air of deja vu…”, laments for example the DH, which describes “frustrated Red Devils” despite “an attractive face”. RTBF, for its part, describes a “cruel scenario”, while Het Laatste Nieuws highlights “defensive errors mercilessly punished by the pale French”. See you at the next World Cup, in the summer of 2026?
