Desjeux, Taccola, Ayarzi… the RC bench has no shortage of solutions

Top 14 (6th day). (26-24)

RC Vannes narrowly lost again, Saturday, in Montpellier (26-24), and it is annoying from a strictly accounting point of view for the red lantern of the Top 14, behind on its passage times despite a calendar difficult.

But unlike last week’s disillusionment at home against Racing (24-27), where the team only played one half (the first), the content was reassuring over almost 80 minutes, if we except the first quarter of an hour. And this, with several recruits and young people who had not yet played this season and who for the most part were discovering the Top 14.

“There is competition”

The staff had decided to operate several rotations, not only to give certain executives time to breathe, but to send a message to the starters who had failed against Racing. “At every position, there is competition,” says head coach Jean-Noël Spitzer, for whom the young people trained at the club will have their say. In the second row, “Mattéo (Desjeux) is coming back from his broken ribs, it was time for him to play. He started last season in the final.”

On the front line, “Simon (Bourgeois) is a young pillar who is progressing and who needs playing time”. At the center, where the squad is nevertheless rich in more experienced talents (Arrate, Saili, Vili, Costossèque), the French U20 international Robin Taccola was not far from offering victory to his team and confirmed his first good outing in (54-19, 4th day).

“We will need everyone”

After the good first half of team B in , the match in Montpellier also confirmed that RC Vannes will be able to rely, to a certain extent, on the depth of its squad. “We are not that heterogeneous. You have to involve as many players as possible and dare,” underlines the Breton coach. On the wings, in a sector of play also well supplied (six players for two positions), the staff successfully launched the versatile center Inaki Ayarzi.

“He wanted to and I had no doubt that he would respond.” On the front line, “Hugo (Djehi) deserved to play, he was injured at the end of preparation and Théo (Béziat) needed to start for the first time”, after his failed entry against Racing. The contribution of the bench was also better than against the Ile-de- residents. “For me, what has been the strength of RCV for several years is the quality of recruitment. The club has done a great job again this summer in the space of just three weeks,” said ambitious Vannes fly-half Maxime Lafage. “We were able to launch a few new players this weekend and the quality of play did not drop. We will need everyone, especially this winter. We have a good squad to fight on all terrains.”
