Deschamps’ first reaction to Mbappé’s Swedish escapade

Asked about Kylian Mbappé’s trip to Stockholm on Sunday on the Téléfoot show, the coach of the team Didier Deschamps did not wish to fuel the controversy. And therefore did not criticize the attitude of his captain.

Don’t count on Didier Deschamps to turn on Kylian Mbappé. Faced with microphones, the coach of the France team tends to protect his players, especially his captain. This Sunday, however, there would have been no question about the Real Madrid striker’s escapade in Stockholm, the same evening when his team challenged Israel in Budapest in the Nations League. While his package with the Blues had already been called into question, Mbappé having started with Real two days before the rally, the French captain, supposedly out of shape to participate in the Blues matches, was spotted at a party in the Swedish capital.

“If the players are on off days, they have the freedom to do what they want”

“A night out? I don’t follow the news of the players who are not there”, commented a very evasive Didier Deschamps on Sunday at the Téléfoot microphone. “Kylian is following a program with his club, Real Madrid, I don’t know if he was off, if he was there or not.”

Eager to put an end to any controversy, the French coach prefers to shed light on his players: “I have to manage those who are there, what I can say is that Kylian sent me a message before the match (against Israel). Afterwards, like any player in his club, he follows a program, day off or not day off… (…) If the players are on days off, they have the freedom to do what they want.” While waiting for Mbappé to resume training with Real Madrid, Didier Deschamps and the Blues will meet in Brussels on Monday evening to face Belgium on the 4th day of the Nations League.
